Therapy For Depression

Therapies for depression range from medication to cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to trauma-informed treatment, such as eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. Because depression is experienced in different ways, therapy for depression must be individualized in order to be most effective.

At TICTI, our expert clinicians work one-on-one with you to understand your diagnosis and help treat your depression. Your therapy will always be personalized to your needs.

Understanding depression

Depression (major depressive disorder) is characterized by feelings of sadness or loss of interest in normal activities – and can also include anger, irritability, anxiety, and other symptoms. Depression is more than just a low mood that lasts a day or two—it’s a serious condition that changes your previous level of functioning. Symptoms may persist indefinitely.

The symptoms of depression may include the following:

  • Feelings of sadness
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities previously enjoyed
  • Difficulty sleeping or sleeping more than usual
  • Fatigue or feeling sluggish
  • Slower physical or mental activity
  • Restless or fidgety physical movements
  • Trouble concentrating or making decisions
  • Feelings of guilt or worthlessness
  • Suicidal thoughts

It’s important to note that some medical conditions (e.g. thyroid problems, vitamin deficiency, or diabetes) may look similar to depression. Although depression is generally caused by trauma, loss, or problematic life situations, when no such cause is obvious, medical issues should be ruled out.

Treatment for depression can include medication or psychotherapy. Some individuals may also need a hospital stay or an outpatient treatment program. Psychotherapy has been found to be at least as effective as medication, with more durable results and no risk of medication side effects.

Have you been experiencing depression symptoms? Depression is treatable, and therapy for depression can reduce your symptoms and help you to heal and live your life.

At TICTI, our trained clinicians apply their expertise to help you understand the root of your depression, work through the past trauma or loss that is likely causing your depression—and regain a sense of hope and satisfaction in your life.

Our research-supported treatment model is individualized and may include:

  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing) – EMDR involves concentrating on aspects of the upsetting memory while following the therapist’s moving finger with your eyes; this is repeated until the memory is no longer distressing. EMDR has been found to be the most efficient of the well-established trauma resolution methods.

  • PC (Progressive Counting) – PC, developed by our founder, Dr. Ricky Greenwald, involves watching a “movie” of the upsetting memory in your mind, while the therapist counts aloud. In all three comparison studies, PC was found to be as effective, efficient, and well-tolerated as EMDR.

  • Flash – The Flash technique is a relatively new method that enables clients to resolve traumatic memories while focusing on positive imagery. Preliminary research has found Flash to be non-distressing, safe, rapid, and effective.

No matter how long you’ve been experiencing depression symptoms, we encourage you to reach out. Depression is highly treatable, and with a trained clinician, you can find joy once again.
