Our Mission
The mission of Trauma Institute & Child Trauma Institute, Inc. (TICTI) is:
- to promote the healing and healthy development of children, adolescents, and adults who have experienced trauma or loss.
- to develop, evaluate, and disseminate effective prevention, assessment and treatment methods.
Our History
Dr. Ricky Greenwald started the Child Trauma web site in 1997, and founded Child Trauma Institute (CTI) in 2002 in order to more effectively disseminate high quality training programs in trauma treatment. CTI became a Massachusetts not-for-profit corporation in 2005, and was granted federal non-profit (501c3) status as a charitable organization in 2006. The Trauma Institute (TI) name was added in 2008 to better convey the full scope of our activities, which apply to adults as well as children and teens. Dr. Greenwald’s clinical practice and intensive therapy services were merged with TICTI in 2012.
TICTI provides therapy, training, consultation, information, and resources for those who work with trauma-exposed children, adolescents, and adults. TICTI also conducts research on trauma assessment and treatment, and on its own training programs. TICTI provides this web site as a resource for clinicians, researchers, and parents. The site continues to add content, is linked by many sites, has received various awards (that we choose not to list), and currently averages about 60,000 hits per month.
TICTI developed a certification for progressive counting (PC) in 2014. In 2022, Dr. Greenwald and Abigail Camden published “A Programmatic Randomized Comparison of Intensive EMDR and Intensive PC for Victims of Crime” in Psychological Trauma: Theory, Research, Practice, and Policy. The results of this study indicate that PC may be comparable to EMDR in the intensive therapy format.
TICTI began its VOCA program to provide free therapy to victims of crime who reside in Western MA in 2016.* TICTI began a privately funded program to provide therapy to people who reside in the Wilmington, NC, area in 2022.
TICTI’s has had it’s main office in Northampton, MA, since 2011. Our first satellite office, was added in Buffalo, NY, in 2015; after which we added Greensboro, NC, in 2016; northern California, in 2019; and Wilmington, NC, as well as Sleepy Hollow, NY, in 2022.
TICTI has conducted/collaborated on research in the following countries: Australia, Bosnia, Canada, Germany, Guatemala, Greece, Iran, Israel, Netherlands, N. Ireland, Scotland, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Trinidad & Tobago, Turkey, and USA.
TICTI has provided training in the following countries: Aruba, Bermuda, Canada, China, England, Germany, Greece, Guatemala, Hong Kong, Israel, Lebanon, Mexico, Netherlands, Nicaragua, N. Ireland, Saint Lucia, Scotland, Singapore, Trinidad & Tobago, Turkey, and USA.
*The VOCA program is supported by the Massachusetts Office for Victim Assistance through a Victims of Crime Act of 1984 (VOCA) grant from the Office for Victims of Crime, Office of Justice Programs, U.S. Department of Justice.
